London Zoo wedding bride and groom in front of jungle mural

London Zoo Wedding Photographers Time Out Recommended

By London Wedding Photographer, Wedding VenuesOne Comment

Without doubt one of the more funky wonderful and unusual places to celebrate your wedding day in the capital is at London Zoo. We are frequent London Zoo wedding photographers, probably the most experienced now, and every time we visit is just as special as the last.

In fact it is an almost surreal experience to work and photograph in such a place with so many great childhood memories. I have very few toys left from those distant days, but I still have the model rhino that my father bought me from the zoo shop when I was six years old.

Wedding ceremony at London Zoo

Another factor that makes a London Zoo wedding such a special affair is the quite frankly excellent staff, from the security to caterers to coordinators on the day. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they are all charming and completely unflappable, a bit like ourselves then!

This particular wedding day for Jackie and Chris started with a bridal prep visit to Jackie’s west end hotel. We had been sent the room number by email but unknown to us it had changed at the last minute. We duly knocked on the wrong door only to be greeted by world famous West Indian cricket legend Sir Gary Sobers! A quick giggle and hello’s and goodbye’s later we soon found the new room number and Jackie and her family.

A short cab ride after that we made our way to the zoo, and the Prince Albert Suite where the wedding ceremony and later the reception would be. This is a great space with a super balcolny overlooking the zoo, and down below to the side a good space for a drinks reception and easy access to the rest of the exhibits and experiences. We have of course worked at the Prince Albert Suite before, and also at the other venue onsite for a wedding ceremony and smaller reception, the pretty Mappin Pavilion. We love them both for different reasons.

After a lovely ceremony in the Prince Albert, guests and the newly weds enjoyed their drinks reception and a meerkat experience laid on by zoo staff. After this we took a little time to wander around the zoo with Jackie and Chris to shoot some couple images for them which included stops among others  at the classic Penguin Pool, Edwardian Reptile House and must ride on before you go London Zoo carousel.

Everytime we are there at the carousel the man that operates the ride (forget his name now – sorry!) is always so friendly and accomodating. I always think to myself of how many perhaps hundreds of thousands of times he has operated the ride over the years and still has such an enthusiastic nature.

Even though we have often photographed at London Zoo, we always aim to create unique images for couples that are not just a repeat of what has gone before, whether from ourselves or others as we know these images will be treasured for many years to come. We enjoy the creativity and the pressure!

After the wedding breakfast and speeches in the Prince Albert Suite, guests had a chance to mingle again and have a few free complimentary rides on the carousel which the wedding party now had for their exclusive use.

Later on after cutting of the wedding cake, a first dance and some general boogying, I rode off into the sunset in my imagination on my plastic rhino, I knew it would come in useful again….

London Eye Wedding Photographers Time Out Recommended

By Barnet Wedding Photographers, London Wedding Photographer, Wedding Venues2 Comments

Some wedding days are destined to live long in the memory, and Tiffany and Ryan’s Coca Cola Official London Eye ceremony and Tower Bridge and West End wedding adventure is one of them.

Wedding dress and shoes hanging at Le Meridien Piccadilly London

We first spoke to Tiffany via Skype as she and Ryan are residents of Toronto Canada but truly love London and try and get over as much as possible. After finding us as London Eye wedding photographers, and knowing we were Time Out Recommended, they wasted no time in getting in touch and sharing their exciting wedding ideas with us.

Bride and groom walking to their London Eye Wedding ceremony

The day started for us capturing the couple’s wedding preparations which were taking place at the lovely and classy Le Méridien hotel in central London’s Piccadilly. A five star hotel built in 1908 it’s just a few short metres from the iconic Eros figure that along with places such as Tower Bridge, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace are timeless symbols of the capital.

We particularly liked Tiffany’s white Doc Martin wedding boots which reflected her personal style and tastes in music and did look great with her wedding dress.  In fact we found we had lots in common in the music department with the couple.

It was a small intimate wedding party of just eight people, all Canadian and all super friendly. When everyone was ready we all boarded a huge white wedding stretch limousine waiting outside Le Méridien for us.

We had quite a bit of time allocated for photos before heading to the London Eye, so we set off towards Tower Bridge and Butlers Wharf. However London traffic being what it can be at the weekends, or for that matter anytime, we were left with just twenty minutes when we finally arrived!

No matter though because we are used to working in tight schedules and had plenty of fun getting a good mix of classic and quirky. I think the fact that the wedding party had extra champagne drinking time in the limo probably helped loosen everyone up too.

Bride and groom at London Eye wedding

Not that anyone needed loosening up, in fact the naturally friendly nature of the wedding couple and their friends meant that wherever we went people wanted to join in for photos, selfies and even two like minded tourists were invited to the ceremony itself. I’ve never seen that before!

At the Coca Cola London Eye the couple were looked after in the VIP lounge before being fast tracked onto their flower decorated personal wedding pod. For the first half hour rotation they had their ceremony with dedications and signings. For the second half we did some photos and drank more champagne….well we only had a little, ever the professionals, maybe…

After that it was back to the stretch limo and our ever patient driver Jo, and zoomed off to the West End and Charring Cross Road to head to The Crow Bar.  This rocky themed venue is a favourite watering hole for Ryan that he wanted to drop in to as part of the celebrations of the couples special day.

From there it was time for the reception and final meal at the Gaucho Piccadilly.

Couple on beach by Oxo Tower engagement photo shoot

Oxo Tower and London’s Southbank engagement shoot

Engagement shoot couple walk on by Thames on Southbank

Barbara and Andrew have lived and loved in  London for a while now, but have decided to emigrate to Canada and start a new life in Vancouver. They wanted a romantic engagement shoot in the capital to celebrate their relationship, and to have a permanent set of photographic memories in places special to them to mark their time here.

Usually this kind of photography is done before a wedding day, but then again there really are no rules and the couple decided to do it a few months afterwards. We had great pleasure photographing their special day at Asia House and Sketch, and you can read about that, and see some of those images here on the blog: Wedding day at Asia House and Sketch in Central London

Couple in window at Southbank engagement shoot

We met each other on a very windy afternoon by the Oxo Tower building on London’s Southbank. It’s an area we have taken the kids to many times on a Sunday, and also one we have a great deal of experience photographing in. From weddings at the Oxo: Oxo Tower Wedding Photographers and St George’s Cathedral to many other engagement shoots in the area: Chinese Engagement shoot in Central London, Tower Bridge and Southbank and London Southbank Engagement Shoot to highlight just a couple.

The Southbank is an area that has had a massive regeneration over recent years, from retail and artistic spaces to state of the art apartments. Yet it retains an urban almost shabby chic look that is visually very appealing.

From the areas around Festival Hall to Gabriel’s Wharf and Oxo Tower, it has many quirky spaces. If we are lucky on an engagement shoot day and the tide goes out near the wharf, then we can shoot on the beach with St Paul’s and the London skyline behind us.

As usual during this kind of photo experience we had a lovely relaxed and fun time, as this mirrors our own personalities, and we feel it is reflected in the imagery. We wish Barbara and Andrew all the very best for their new life in Canada, and look forward to hearing their news in the future.

London Waldorf Hilton Hotel Wedding Photographers

By London Wedding Photographer, Wedding VenuesNo Comments

We were delighted as ever to photograph at one of the capital’s most famous and iconic venues in our role as London Waldorf Hilton Hotel wedding photographers for Danielle and Ben’s big day.

Israeli dancing at Waldorf Hilton London wedding reception

This Edwardian gem was opened in 1908 and commissioned by William Waldorf Astor 1st Viscount Astor, and has been a landmark in the Covent Garden area of central London ever since. It’s certainly a classic venue for a celebration of any kind and Danielle and Ben’s Jewish wedding day was no exception!

Bride gets ready at Waldorf Hilton London photo

Our coverage started with Danielle and her bridesmaids and families preparation’s at the hotel itself in one of their classic suites. Ben and his groomsmen prepared themselves in the fabulous Palm Court area of the Waldorf, a spectacular Edwardian glass roofed space that was immortalised on celluloid in the 1953 film “Titanic” as the famous ship’s ballroom.

The Palm Court area was where the wedding ceremony itself and bedekken (unveiling ceremony) would take place, with a beautiful white chuppah (wedding canopy for those not au fait with the term) featuring as the centrepiece.

Hampstead wedding shot summer

After some photographic time with the ladies of the day, and then Ben and best men shots I made me way to the Tish room for the start of the wedding day formalities. We are veterans of Jewish wedding celebrations, but for those not familiar with them reading this post the “Tish” (sometimes spelt “tisch”) is a time when the men of the day get together in a dedicated room to eat and drink a little, socialise, and sings some songs before the serious business of the groom marrying his bride. It is also a time when the rabbi can explain the meaning of the jewish marriage certificate to the groom to be and get him to formally agree to it’s terms.

The “bedekken” which Danielle chose to have in front of the wedding party is stepped in Jewish tradition, and to put it simply is a veiling of his future wife by soon to be husband (also spelt badeken). It is a moment often charged with fantastic emotion, as it is the first time bride and groom see each other on their wedding day.

After that came a lovely heartfelt ceremony under the chuppah. I shot images close by under the canopy with the couple, their parents and rabbis, while Joanna shot discreetly from various angles around the Palm Court. Video we should mention this special day was provided by Barry Cookson.

After the smashing of the glass underfoot and the inevitable enthusiastic celebrations it was time for champagne and canopies around the Court. I used this time to photograph some pre planned family shots, while Joanna went round doing some reportage photography and taking guest request shots as often happens at this time, especially at a Jewish wedding!

The wedding breakfast took place in the magnificent Adelphi Suite, along with some very energetic Israeli dancing, speeches, cake cutting and a great deal of partying till late into the night. As usual with wedding receptions of this size at the Waldorf Hilton there was a great live band to keep the energy going to top off a splendid and dramatic day all round.

Wedding couple kiss in a doorway on their central London wedding

Now where did the couple shots come from and why? Usually on a wedding day we will find twenty minutes or so to take the couple away, either around the wedding or reception venue, or outside whether that’s urban streets or countryside next to a manor house for example. With Daniele and Ben’s wedding the schedule unusually didn’t allow for this, so what we did was book off some time on a other day after their honeymoon.  Where? Round the corner from their flat in Hampstead, and why not!

Wedding couple dancing at Waldorf London wedding

This part I did on my own, and I found it very relaxing and even more enjoyable knowing the couple weren’t worrying about the timeline of their wedding day. The sun came out too, so all in all perfect. It was nice too because I got to know the couple a better and also meet their dog.
